Trimester-by-Trimester Guide
Select a trimester to see what your care involves at each stage.
Establishing Your Pregnancy
The first trimester is a time of rapid change and, for many women, significant anxiety. Early appointments focus on confirming the pregnancy, assessing your health baseline, and planning your care pathway.
- Booking appointment and full medical history review
- Dating scan and early pregnancy ultrasound
- Blood tests: blood group, full blood count, thyroid, infections
- Down's syndrome and chromosomal screening counselling
- Nausea, vomiting, and early pregnancy symptom management
- Nutritional guidance and supplement advice (folic acid, vitamin D)
- Lifestyle counselling: diet, exercise, work, and travel
Growth, Monitoring & Wellbeing
The second trimester is often the most comfortable period of pregnancy. Appointments focus on monitoring foetal growth, screening for structural abnormalities, and supporting your overall wellbeing.
- Anomaly scan (typically at 18–20 weeks)
- Foetal growth and wellbeing assessment
- Gestational diabetes screening (glucose tolerance test)
- Blood pressure and urine monitoring
- Anaemia screening and iron supplementation if required
- Cervical length assessment where indicated
- Pregnancy discomfort management: back pain, heartburn, swelling
Preparing for Birth
The third trimester involves closer monitoring as your due date approaches. Appointments become more frequent, and birth planning becomes a central focus of your care.
- Regular foetal growth scans and wellbeing checks
- Blood pressure monitoring and pre-eclampsia screening
- Foetal position assessment and presentation
- Birth plan discussion: mode of delivery, pain relief, preferences
- Group B Streptococcus (GBS) screening
- Post-dates management and induction counselling
- Hospital admission guidance and what to expect in labour
High-Risk Pregnancy Care
Some pregnancies require additional specialist monitoring due to pre-existing medical conditions, previous pregnancy complications, or factors identified during antenatal care. Dr Roy has experience managing a range of high-risk conditions and works closely with hospital teams to ensure the safest possible outcome.
- Gestational diabetes
- Pre-eclampsia and hypertensive disorders
- Placenta praevia and placental complications
- Foetal growth restriction (FGR)
- Multiple pregnancy (twins)
- Previous caesarean section (VBAC counselling)
- Thyroid disorders in pregnancy
- Recurrent miscarriage and pregnancy loss
Postnatal Care
The weeks following birth are a time of significant physical and emotional adjustment. Dr Roy provides postnatal review appointments to assess your recovery, address any concerns, and support your transition into motherhood.
- Postnatal check at 6 weeks (mother and baby)
- Wound assessment following caesarean section or perineal repair
- Breastfeeding support and guidance
- Postnatal depression screening and mental health support
- Contraception counselling post-delivery
- Return to exercise and activity guidance
